Located 33 kilometers from the city of Córdoba, Espejo rises on a hill in the heart of the Campiña Sur. This enclave, of pre-Roman origin, reached notable importance during the Andalusian period, when it was known as Al-Munastir and was part of the Cora of Córdoba. At that time, its agricultural and strategic role made it a key point within the defensive system of the territory.
The Castle of Alcalat, which crowns the town center, preserves remains of that Islamic fortress on which the current Christian structure was built after the conquest in the 13th century.
